as with many axioms, i believe that the third person/second person agent who is the eater is EVERYPERSON, whom dharmashastra would call Devadatta and halakhah Ploni. As to whether that axiomatic actor in fact ate, I must confess that I too am in the dark. We must simply trust that in the long run the arc of the narrative world of the proverb will bend towards tail eating. :)
